On the Horizon: MVP Rally, House Hearings & Breakthrough on #StopCopCity
We’re back after an embarrassing long hiatus with this week’s edition of On the Horizon looking ahead at a major rally against the MVP, House GOP shenanigans, and a major development in Stop Cop City
Climate Organizers to Biden: #StopMVP NOW!
President Biden signed the “Fiscal Responsibility Act” into law over the weekend and officially ended the ongoing debt ceiling crisis. While the deal did avert a financial crisis, it also included a laundry list of items off the right wing wish list including work requirements for SNAP benefits, a streamlined permitting process for dirty energy projects and a specific agreement to green light the Mountain Valley Pipeline.
In response, the climate justice movement is mobilizing for a major rally at the White House on Thursday, June 8 at 2pm.

Business as usual at the Capitol
This week the House and the Senate are both in session. After a couple of weeks of flirting with disaster by playing games with the full faith and credit of the United States both chambers are looking ahead at their respective political priorities.
On the House side, Republicans in the Oversight Committee are taking aim at DC’s home rule again, this time with a focus on elections in the district. The committee will be holding a hearing on American Confidence in Elections: The Path to Election Integrity in the District of Columbia.
The hands off DC coalition will once again be outside to make our city’s opposition to federal meddling known.

The GOP-led house also has a series of hearings scheduled to give members a chance to grandstand against the Administration’s handling of the end of Title 42 and the recent influx of asylum seekers in the US.

On the Senate side, Georgia Senators Rafael Warnock and Jon Ossify have FINALLY spoken out about construction of the controversial Cop City project in their state, and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s draconian attacks on communities mobilizing against the project.

The two spoke out after the GBI raided the homes of legal support workers for the “crime” of operating a legal support and bail fund. The Senators’ decision to break their silence did not come out of nowhere. Both were treated to office visits from DC-based organizers last week and Senator Warnock’s commencement address at Bard College was interrupted by students chanting “Stop Cop City.”
Gun Violence Survivors Sit in at Capitol
A group of family members and survivors from the Parkland and Pulse mass shootings are launching the Ban Assault Weapons NOW! Week-long sit in at the US Capitol on June 6. Organizers say they’re going to be taking up residence at the Senate Swamp (to the North East of the Capitol Building).
