This week marks the one year anniversary of the Supreme Court’s disastrous decision in Dodds v. Jackson Women’s Health, overturning Roe v. Wade and opening the door to abortion bans. In the past year at least 20 states moved to ban or restrict abortion access.
Opponents of reproductive freedom are marking the occasion with a Celebrate Life Day rally at the Lincoln Memorial followed by a $3,500/table Celebration of Life Gala at the Renaissance Marriott.
The Women’s March will be marking the date with the “We’re STILL the Resistance” day of action in DC and around the country.
As usual, the announcement about this action was coupled by the Women’s March’s classic Porta Potty fundraising pitch.
Trump, DeSantis, Pence, and the rest of the GOP field make their case at the Faith & Freedom Road to Majority Conference
Students for Life won’t be the only group of right wingers traveling into DC this week. The Faith and Freedom Coalition is set to hold their “Road to Majority” conference this weekend at the Washington Hilton. Mike Pence, Ron DeSantis, Chris Christy, Tim Scott and Vivek Ramaswamy are set to make their case to the 2,500 conservatives during the morning plenary on Friday. And Trump is scheduled to headline the Patriot’s Gala on Saturday night.
Tickets to the whole event are still available and at $150, they’re cheaper than the Students for Life Gala.
SCOTUS isn’t done damaging America
The Supreme Court’s October 2022 term is coming to a close and the unelected, unaccountable council of high judges is expected to hand down a set of new rulings before the July 4 holiday weekend. Some blockbuster cases on the docket include:
303 Creative v Elenis in which a would-be web designer (WHO HADN’T EVEN STARTED THEIR BUSINESS) filed suit to protect themselves from the possibility that a same sex couple might try to hire them to build a wedding site.
Moore v Harper in which the North Carolina State Legislature asserts its right to throw out the votes of the people of North Carolina and appoint whoever they want as Senators, Representatives, or Electors in the Electoral College. (January 6… lawsuit edition!)
Biden v Nebraska - a lawsuit attempting to overturn Biden’s partial Student Loan cancellation program.
Interestingly, the courts decisions so far this term haven’t all been terrible. In two surprise rulings last week the court threw out a badly gerrymandered electoral map in Alabama and protected the Indian Child Welfare Act.
Pushing back against the anti-democratic court, coalition of more than 100 progressive groups launched a new campaign, United for Democracy, calling on Congress to reign in the Supreme Court. The project reportedly launched with a $1 million ad buy focused on states with key Senate races. Planned Parenthood, NARAL, Giffords, the American Federation of Teachers, the National Education Association and the League of Conservation Voters have all pledged to dedicate money and staff time to the project.
